H. Burton Powers of Wellesley, a retired senior partner at the law firm of Tyler and Reynolds in Boston, died Nov. 8 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 91.
Born in Boston, Mr. Powers was educated at the Park School, the Williston Northampton School, Phillips Exeter Academy, Class of 1929, Harvard College, Class of 1933, and Harvard Law School, Class of 1936.
A veteran of the Navy, Mr. Powers rose from apprentice seaman to lieutenant commander and was posted initially to Submarine Chaser Training School at Miami. He spent the last months of World War II at the Bureau of Yards and Docks in Washington, D.C.
Before serving, Mr. Powers was employed for six years with the law firms of Warner Stackpole, then Tyler and Reynolds. During peacetime, he was a trustee and practiced trust, tax and probate law. He was a member of the Boston Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar, various federal bars, the Supreme Court Bar, the Probate Committee of the Boston Bar Association, the Boston Probate Forum, and the Legal Aid Association.
He was a director on the Executive and Beneficary Committees of the Rogerson House, and director of the Gibson House Museum, and director and president of the Stowe Day Foundation in Hartford, Conn., from 1977-85.
He was a member of the Society of Colonial Wars, the City Club, the Singing Beach Club, and the Manchester Yacht Club.
Mr. Powers is survived by his wife, Anne (Lyman); two sons, Henry B. Jr. of Brookline, and George L. of East Greenwich, R.I.; two daughters, Katherine B. and Eleanor H., both of New York; and four grandchildren.
