• Notes

Staples Funeral Home Litchfield- Elmer D. Eaton, age 92, passed away Thursday, December 20th at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta. He was born January 9, 1926 in Litchfield, the son of Elmer Sr. and Edith Hinkley Eaton. He grew up on a farm and, at age 18, joined the Marines in April of 1944 and was honorably discharged in August of 1946. He met his wife Margaret Stevens at the Litchfield Fair and married her in May of 1953. He built his own house board by board with a handsaw. All the children grew up in the house, affectionately called Eatonville. Later in life, he helped build 5 more houses for each of his children. One of his grandchildren is currently remodeling Eatonville, and this is where a gathering will be held after his burial in the spring. Junior was employed by the Maine Department of Transportation for 34 years as a truck driver. He worked many long hours plowing snow and building roads. He enjoyed many years trapping beaver, and was also lucky enough to get a deer most every year and even got a trophy for the biggest buck. He was gifted at being able to figure out how to fix most anything, whether it be anything around the house or a vehicle. He was a gifted douser, able to find wells for so many in the community. He drove an Indian motorcycle when he was young. He enjoyed shopping at Mardens. He split wood and helped a lot of people put up their wood using his wood splitter. He loved sweets, especially peanut butter balls and fudge, and he even tried his hand at baking cakes, although he struggled with keeping the raisins from falling to the bottom. He is predeceased by his wife Maggie, and his sisters Fran and Bev.
