LONGMEADOW - Florence Dow, of Longmeadow MA. died Friday morning at the Jewish Nursing Home in Longmeadow, MA after a long illness.
She most recently resided at the Jewish Nursing Home and previously at 375 Beacon Circle and 228 Nassau Drive in Springfield.
Florence was born in Salem, MA and was graduated from Jamaica Plain High School. Florence is survived by two daughters, Judith Vokes of Nashua, NH and Mari Nelson of Wyoming RI and a son, Joseph Dow, of Longmeadow, MA, a brother, Kenneth Leyland, of East Boston, and seven grandchildren, Brad Nelson, Jaime El-Helw, Mary Irvine, Rob Vokes and Beth Vokes, Aaron and Noah Dow.
Florence was a long time employee of the Springfield Public Schools: a school librarian at Talmadge School in Springfield, and formerly the executive secretary to the director of the Wright-Patterson Airfield in Dayton, OH, and executive secretary to the president of the Newburyport Savings Bank. Florence founded the gift shop at the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts and at the former Springfield Hospital in addition to volunteer work for many other charitable organizations in the Greater Springfield area. She was also a member of the Baystate Medical Center Women's Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star.
