LANDSDOWNE, Pa. -- Carter Michael Zervas, 52, formerly of Gardiner, Maine, passed away on April 2, 2004, at Keystone House in Wyndmoor after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Hartford, Conn., and raised in Hartford and Gardiner. He graduated from Gardiner Area High School, graduated with honors and a bachelor's degree from Colby College and received a master of fine arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He also attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Brooklyn Museum School in New York. Carter was the recipient of a Fulbright Grant from the prestigious Institute of International Education, which allowed him to study art in Florence, Italy. After returning to the United States, he and his wife returned to Florence, where they lived and traveled for two years.
At an early age, Carter displayed a talent and passion for art. A realistic painter, his work was exhibited professionally in many galleries in the Philadelphia area. His work also has been exhibited at the Gold/Smith Gallery in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport, Maine. His subject matter included landscapes, figures and still-lifes. His later work explored storytelling via large, imaginative paintings, often with humorous or melodramatic overtones.
Carter is survived by his wife, Rachael, and daughter Claudia, of Pennsylvania; his mother, Ruth Zervas of Randolph, Maine; his sister, Cynthia Brown and her husband, Charles, of Randolph, and their daughter, Jessica; and several nieces, cousins, aunts and uncles.
He was predeceased by his father, Myron Zervas; and his grandparents, Michael and Julia Zervas and A. Raymond and Pauline Carter.
