PORTLAND - Jean Stevens Hennessy passed away peacefully December 31, 2015, at the Sedgewood Commons Care facility in Falmouth.
She was born in Portland on March 10, 1924, the daughter of Van Mitchell and Amelia Haskell Stevens of Portland and Pittsfield.
Jean grew up in Portland, spending summers on Peaks Island, and graduated from Deering High School, Class of 1942. She attended the University of Maine at Orono where she was selected as a Sophomore Eagle and was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.
She married Thomas J. Hennessy, Jr., her junior high sweetheart, and they were married for 49 years until his death in 1993.
She and her husband operated Hennessy Associates real estate appraisers in Portland and Cape Elizabeth. For many years, she was an active member of the Cape Elizabeth, Bar Harbor, Blue Hill Garden and Sarasota Garden Clubs. She was a member of the Portland Junior League, Purdue Women's Club, the Red Hat Society, and the Ellsworth Busy Bodies.
Jean lived in Cape Elizabeth and after retiring, she lived in Sarasota, Fla., West Lafayette, Ind., Ellsworth, Maine and Redlands, Calif. before returning to Maine in 2011.
She was an expert seamstress, a gardener, and an accomplished artist and musician.
Jean was predeceased by her parents; her husband Thomas J. Hennessy, Jr.; and her son Thomas J. Hennessy III.
Jean is survived by her sister, Patricia Cunningham of Orono, her brother Van M. Stevens, Jr. of Sherborn, Mass.; her daughters, Susan Cotter and husband John of Englewood, Fla., Martha Lambert and husband Steve of Portland, Judith Buchanan and husband David of Cumming, GA. and Jane Harris and husband George of Uniontown, Ohio. She is also blessed with eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
