James Richard, Dick, Demory 74 years old, died on 02/16/18 in his home in Sperryville, Va, after a long struggle to cope with metastatic colon cancer.
Dick was well-loved by his large family and circle of friends, but no one was more disappointed in his premature death than he was because Dick was a doer, and there were still projects to complete and additional skills to master, and he really wanted to cut another 6 cords or so of firewood and cook and share a home-cured country ham he'd been aging.
No one who met Dick was not impressed by how capable he was. He started his professional life as a bricklayer, but he was identified as someone with additional talents and hired by Neutron Products, Inc. where he became a skilled technician who made and installed Cobalt 60 sources at installations throughout North America and Europe. He continued to acquire skills and master building and farming practices, fine woodworking, as well as leather tooling, chair-caning, and even basket weaving. He was generous with his time and abilities, and most of us who knew him well have something he made for us, whether it's a leather belt or the foundation of a new home. In his last years, he enjoyed making various, sometimes dubious (pecans?), moonshine recipes of his own invention, and sitting on the deck he built to smoke a cigar and think about his next project.
Dick is survived by his wife, Lisa Jones, and son Glenden Jake Demory, and in-laws Bet and Jake Jones of Sperryville, VA. He is also survived by a son, Rich Demory, his daughter-in-law Catherine, and four grandchildren, Amanda, Noelle, Jim, and Hannah of Damascus, MD. Dick loved his siblings and their families very much. His surviving full siblings and spouses are Mae Pearrell, Junior Demory, Barbara and Junior Wilt, Shirley Phillips, Les and Mary Demory, Ron and Dottie Demory, Susie Tucker, and Louise Dinterman.
