Shirley (Chapman) Alves, 70, of 94 North Main St., an artist for the deaf, died Friday at home.
She was a separation artist for Tichnor Bros. and Metropolitan Lithographic Co.
She designed and drew pictures for the deaf under a grant at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
She worked in the Northfield-Mount Hermon School bookstore in the 1960s, and was a bookkeeper for Kmart Corp. in Saugus and Hadley. She retired in 1992.
She lived in Bennington, Vt., and Northfield before moving here.
Born and schooled in Saugus, she was a graduate of the New England School of Art.
She was a singer with the United Service Organization (USO) during World War II.
She leaves a son, Mark J. of Charlemont; two daughters, Gail S. Stone of South Deerfield, and June K. Nelson of Plainfield, Vt.; two sisters, Marion Harmon of Reading, and June Angell of Melrose, and six grandchildren.
