John F. Cottell, 83, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at the New York State Veterans' Home.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma, of 60 years; his four sons and their spouses, David and Bonnie, Coventry, N.Y., Scott and Yvonne, Maple Valley, Wash., Mark and Heather, Coventry, N.Y., and John Jr., Monroe, Conn.; nine grandchildren, Jeromy Cottell and wife, Jill, Redwood City, Calif., Jennifer Williams and husband, David, Las Vegas, Nev., Trevor Cottell and wife, Kristen, Seattle, Wash., Verity and Jered Cottell, Maple Valley, Wash., Adam Cottell, Coventry, N.Y., John III, Eileen and Timothy Cottell, Monroe, Conn.; and two great-grandchildren, Skylar Cottell, Redwood City, Calif., and Evan Williams, Las Vegas, Nev.
John was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the VFW in Afton. John was a master carpenter who enjoyed the outdoors. He was in Scouting for over 40 years, first as a Scout, then Scout Master and Explorer Advisor. He was affiliated with the Ski Patrol in New Jersey and the New Jersey Umpire Association. John was also a member of the Binghamton Umpire Association. Chess and fishing were his hobbies. He belonged to the US Chess Federation and was a chess coach at the Bainbridge-Guilford School.
