ELIOT, Maine - Rufus Warren "Ferg" Ferguson Jr. 89, of Eliot, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, after a brief illness.
Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on April 16, 1915, he was the son of Rufus Warren Sr. and Agnes (Earing) Ferguson. He grew up in Portsmouth, where he was an active Cub Scout and Boy Scout of the Daniel Webster Council. He was one of the scouts who blazed the Daniel Webster Trail from Dollycopp to the top of Mt. Madison, where it intersects the Appalachian Trail. They also built the cairn at the summit. He was scoutmaster of Troop 168, master councilor of Portsmouth Chapter No. 3, Order of Demolay, and a 1933 graduate of Portsmouth High School.
In 1939, he married Dorothy Wright Roberts and continued to reside in Portsmouth, where they were both active in scouting, the Middle Street Baptist Church and the Roger Williams Club. He was employed by the Morley Button Factory and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he worked as a machinist and tool and cutter grinder. He retired in 1972.
He was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman. He loved hunting, fishing, mountain climbing, boating and gardening. In 1946 he moved to Kittery Point and was again deeply involved in scouting. As scoutmaster of Troop 314 of the Pine Tree Council, he guided boys for many years in the skills of wilderness survival, camping and boating safety. He was an active member of the Kittery Point Congregational Church and the Supper Club. He was president of the Mitchell School PTA; a member of the Kittery Point Volunteer Fire Department; and a founding member of the Downeast Western Square Dance Club. He moved to Eliot in 1979.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, in 1991.
Survivors include a daughter, Gail Adams and Kenny Shunk of Kittery and South Berwick; a son, Richard Ferguson and Patricia Nass of Wolfeboro, N.H., a son and his wife, John and Jill Ferguson of Gilford, N.H.; a daughter and her husband, Nancy and Robert Kotsonis of Greenland, N.H.; a son and his wife, Robert and Susan Ferguson of Belmont, N.H.; a granddaughter and her husband, Deborah and Richard Romano of South Berwick; a granddaughter and her husband, Donna and Mike Young of South Berwick; a grandson, Brett Ferguson and Shari Lizotte of Sanbornton, N.H., a grandson and wife, Peter and Brooke Kotsonis of Atlanta, Ga.; a granddaughter, Amy Kotsonis of Greenland, N.H., and a granddaughter, Jennifer Ferguson of Belmont, N.H.; and seven great-grandchildren.
