Herbert A. Thelen died at the age of 94 on Feb. 5, 2008, in Laguna Woods, Calif.
Born May 8, 1913, and raised in Berkeley, Calif., he received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of California. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1945. He was a professor of education at the University of Chicago from 1945 until his retirement in 1979.
In the 1940s and l950s he helped create the new field of group dynamics. He helped organize the Hyde Park-Kenwood Community Conference and pioneered the development of block groups that gave neighbors the experience of collaborating to address shared local problems.
He developed his perspective on education in five books: Dynamics of Groups at Work (1954); Emotional Dynamics and Group Cultures (1958); Education and the Human Quest (1960); Classroom Grouping for Teachability (1967); and The Classroom Society (1981).
He was married to Leonora Elizabeth Knox Thelen from 1937 until her death in 1977 and to Sophia Lazarus from 1977 until her death in 2004. He is survived by a twin brother Edmund of Strafford, Pa., son David of Bloomington, Ind., daughter Marian Kontek of Sun Prairie, Wis., and by two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. During his long retirement he pursued longtime interests in photography, hiking (on trails that crisscrossed mountains in southern Calif.), and music (in Leisure World string quartets and ensembles).
