POWELL, Florence Isobel Hamilton, Loved by many as "Flos," passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February, 18, 2005, with her children at her side.
She was born to Frederic and Florence Hamilton in Roseburg, Oregon, on August 3, 1923. A lifelong Roseburg resident, she was born on the Half Moon Orchard in Garden Valley, graduated from Roseburg High School in 1941 and attended the University of Oregon.
Flos worked hard her whole life to support her family and retired from Herbert Lumber Company after a long career as a bookkeeper. She spent her retirement years volunteering at the Roseburg Visitor Center, where she shared her vast knowledge and love of Douglas County. She also donated her time to support the Friendly Kitchen's Meals on Wheels program and the FISH Pantry.
She had a passion for music, and encouraged the growth of the local music and arts communities through her involvement with the Community Concert Association. She was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as church treasurer for 26 years. She was an original member of the Celestial Tollers Bell Choir and actively participated in the church through many committees. Flos also was an active member of PEO Sisterhood, BI Chapter of Roseburg, and a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi.
She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid reader, enjoyed the Oregon beaches, had a passion for dolphins, and treasured all her Bunko friends at Shadow Ranch.
She is survived by sister, Frederica "Fritzi" Hicks of Hillsboro, Oregon; daughter, Susan Bennett and her husband, David of Kingston, Washington; son, Michael Powell and his wife, Kathy of Stayton, Oregon; daughter, LuAnn Gorthy and her husband, Steve of Roseburg; grandchildren, Clint Gorthy; Deanna Doerk and her husband, Steve; Joel Gorthy and his wife, Adele; and Jarod Powell and his wife, Penrhynn; great-grandchildren, Rhaeley Shaffer; Jylian Doerk; Zackery Doerk; Lillian Gorthy; and the soon to be born, Benjamin Powell; niece and nephews, Scott Hicks; Laurie Hicks; Jeff Hicks; and David Hicks. Also Flos leaves a wealth of wonderful friends in the Roseburg area, both lifelong and new-found.
