Donald "Don" Schmidt, 76, passed away surrounded by family at St. Michael Medical Center in Silverdale, WA, on May 28, 2022.
The youngest of three children, Don was born in February 1946 in Colorado to Leonard and Ruth Schmidt. He grew up in Boulder, CO, and attended Boulder High School.
At the age of 17, Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Alameda, CA. His first assignment was as a Personnelman in Okinawa, Japan. Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was next and then he transferred to Whidbey Island, WA, where he met and later married his wife, Johneé, on Aug. 23, 1969. The newlyweds transferred south to California and Don attended the Data Systems Technician School on Mare Island in Vallejo, CA. Johneé, promised Don if he got an "A" on his weekly exam, she would bake him a cake. She baked a lot of cakes! After he graduated as a data systems technician, Don became an instructor at the school for a time. He was then appointed to the aircraft carrier USS Ranger CVA61, aboard which he served for almost five years before leaving sea duty in 1975. The couple had a baby girl in 1971.
In 1980, Don and his family of three did a tour in Italy. He was assigned to Mobile Technical Unit 6 (MOTU 6). While in Italy, the family enjoyed traveling throughout Europe before Don retired from the Navy after 20 years. The family moved to Poulsbo in 1985. As a civilian, Don worked for several government-support companies as a computer systems technician. He later worked in civil service for the U.S. Navy at Keyport and then Bangor as a computer systems network administrator. He retired in the early 2000s after 20 years with the civil service.
Above all else, Don delighted in spending time with family and friends, especially his two grandsons who adored their "PopPop." He also enjoyed gold panning, rock hounding, boating, fishing, crabbing, camping, eating, napping, and taking photos and videos of his grandsons and family events. He was always very eager to help a friend or family with any type of computer issue. Later in life, Don discovered his love for cooking and made some excellent dishes.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Johneé Schmidt of Poulsbo; his daughter, Christina Hallock of Seattle; two grandsons, Dawson Hallock of Gig Harbor and Kolton Hallock of Portland, OR; former son-in-law, Ric Hallock of Glenoma, WA; numerous nieces and nephews; and other beloved family members and friends.
Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brother, Charles "Chuck" Schmidt and wife Laurie of Bremerton, and his sister, Judith "Jude" Biegert, a longtime Langley, WA, resident.
