Longtime Solvang rancher and philanthropist John "Jack" Herbert Grimes died peacefully at home with loved ones at his side. He was 84 years old. A Solvang resident since 1980, Grimes died on Sept. 28.
Grimes was born at home in Owensmouth (Canoga Park), Calif., on Dec. 23, 1923.
He attended Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, where he was captain of the baseball team and senior class president. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Grimes served in the South Pacific, including Guadalcanal and Bougainville. During his Bougainville service, he was awarded the Purple Heart. After being discharged, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Ann Daggett.
At this time, Grimes began a successful painting and contracting business in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. In the '70s he had a place in Palm Desert and played in the Bob Hope Desert Classic, winning several trophies. After coming to Solvang with his wife, Betty, he built the ranch Tierra de Suenos where many fundraisers were held, including Elks Recreation Queen events and the first Sheriff's Day at the Ranch. Grimes was an active member of Rancheros Visitadores and the Santa Barbara Trail Riders. He was also an enthusiastic golfer and enjoyed playing poker, riding and hosting events for various charities.
He was widowed in 1993. In 1995, he was married to JoAnn Frank, and retired with her to Alisal Ranch.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnn; two daughters, Kathie Guhl of Sonoma and Candi Edie of Santa Ynez; one stepdaughter, Allison Marino of Solvang; three granddaughters and one grandson; three great-grandchildren; and three step-granddaughters.
