• Notes

  With ten brave shipmates, he perished in the Bay of Biscayne while voluntarily engaged in saving the torpedoed British steamer Wellington. Triumphantly saved from the enemy, the vessel succumbed to the gale seventeen hours later. These men were seamen and inheritors of the traditions of the sea. Their example shall live forever. Navy Cross awarded posthumously, for extraordinary heroism, by presidential citation, 11 November 1920.
