ST. HELENA - Arney Dale Pope, born June 20, 1922 in Palo Pinto County, Texas and raised in Lipan, Texas, died at St. Helena Hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005. Dale Pope was the last remaining sibling of his family. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Franklin Pope and his mother, Martha (Clark) Pope, both of Lipan, Texas.
Dale Pope served in the United States Navy in active duty for 7 years, and as a reservist for 15 years. His first tour of duty was aboard the USS Portland in the area of the Gilbert, Santa Cruz, and Solomon Islands. He later served aboard the USS Vestal, a repair ship, providing emergency repairs to other ships in the areas of Saipan and Iwo Jima. He was a signalman aboard these ships. As a reservist he served as quartermaster.
After his naval service, Dale was a school custodian in Oakland for 14 years, and in Calistoga for 15 years, until his retirement. He served as an elder at Highlands Christian Fellowship in Calistoga until he was no longer able. He enjoyed spending time with family, helping others in their times of need, providing maintenance and repair services to many, and appreciating the scenery wherever he happened to be. His patient, gentle demeanor endeared him to anyone who knew him.
Dale is survived by his wife, Audrey (Hunt) Pope, his four children; Glenn Pope of Calistoga, Cheryl (Pope) Simon of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kenneth Pope of Healdsburg, and Brian Pope of Clinton, Iowa. He also had six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
