TAUNTON – Lois E. (Tyndal) Shumway, 79, died in Morton Hospital on Wednesday, April 30, 2008. Born in Taunton, the daughter of the late Edward and F. Maude ( Scantleberry) Tyndal, she was predeceased by her husband Alonzo H. Shumway, Jr., with whom she shared forty-four years of married life.
A graduate of the Class of 1947 of Taunton High School, and a graduate of Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School, she was employed by the Sprague Oil Company before her marriage, and returned to the workforce as a secretary in the law offices of Martin and Strojny, once her children were in school. She was very active in the leadership of the Girl Scouts of America, and led Brownie and Girl Scouts troops at Mulcahey School for many years. She was also active in the Mother's Club and served several years as president of the National Secretaries Association.
Mrs. Shumway was a member of the Calvary Methodist Church and later joined the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Taunton. An accomplished pianist, she frequently played for various civic and volunteer functions, including the church's Sunday School. She was an avid animal activist who was actively involved in animal rescue. For more than fifty years she summered at the family home in Portsmouth, RI.
Mrs. Shumway survived by her four children, Dr. Sandra E. Shumway of Groton, CT, Lorna S. Ntabakos of North Dighton, Lon H. Shumway, and Bradford H. Shumway, both of Taunton . She was the grandmother of Harris Ntabakos and his wife Megan, and Nicole Ntabakos of North Dighton, and Anastasia Blanchard and her husband Christopher of Taunton; and was the great-grandmother of Isabella Blanchard, Taunton. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Beth Shumway of Portsmouth, RI; a treasured family friend, William Yuill of Taunton; and a nephew and two nieces.
