SUNDERLAND - Raymond F. "Buster" Bowen, 78, a lifelong resident of Sunderland, passed away on Aug. 21 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.
He was born in Sunderland on Oct. 9, 1932, the son of Herbert J. Bowen, Sr., and Ethel (Morehouse) Bowen. He married the former Janis Guber in Arlington on Oct. 8, 1955. Buster served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
Buster worked for Mack Molding in Arlington for 10 years. He then became a carpenter, a profession he was exceptional at. Buster took great pride in anything he did whether it be his carpentry, refinishing furniture or in mowing his and his neighbors lawns, which totaled about four acres worth. He was also very adept as a mechanic and was as meticulous with his mechanical tools and work area as he was with his lawns.
Buster enjoyed hunting and touring the entire Southwestern Vermont area. His greatest joy in life came from the time spent with his family, especially the times with his grandchildren. Buster was a man who knew a little about a lot of things.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janis, of Sunderland, his daughters; Brenda Mattison, and her husband Kevin, of Arlington, and Rose Bowen and her partner, Tom Rollins, of Cuttingsville, Vt., his brother; Albert "Bill" Bowen of Sunderland, his sister; Harriet Landon, of Rutland, his grandchildren and their spouses; Kandy and Walt Southworth, Jason and Angie Griffis, Andy and Michelle Griffis, Amy and Brian Hawley, and Jill and Bobby Maynard, Shannon Griffis and Cody Griffis and his great grandchildren; Parker Mattison, Cole Morse, Nickolas and Timothy Southworth, Carter and Caylie Hawley, Owen Griffis, Kyrrah and Natalie Maynard, and Maddelyn Griffis.
He was predeceased by his brothers, H. James Bowen, Jr., Parker Bowen and Edwin Bowen and his sisters, Norma Corey and Caroline Bowen.
