Brattleboro- Kenneth James "Ken" Martel, 53, of Garfield Drive passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, October 6, 2015 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family, following a period of declining health.
Ken was born in Brattleboro on November 5, 1961 the son of Arthur and Carolyn (Kiernan) Martel.
He attended Saint Michael's Parochial School and Brattleboro Union High School. He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Air Force stationed stateside in Plattsburg, N.Y. and following his honorable discharge from active service returned home to Brattleboro.
He worked most of his career as a carpenter for several greater Brattleboro area general contractors that included, Brunelle & Son, CWF Construction, Jim Carr General Contracting and Lamb's Construction. More recently he worked as intake coordinator for Teen Challenge in Johnson, VT. Ken was steadfast in his walk of faith especially during his time of illness always keeping the faith. He had attended both Community Bible Chapel and Vernon Union Church. Of his leisure time activities Ken loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping and time shared with his family at their camp at Lake Mascoma in Lebanon. His family meant the world to him as well as his close friends.
Survivors include his mother Carolyn of Vernon, one brother Timothy Martel and his wife Cindy of Vernon, five sisters, Deborah Martel of Brattleboro, Pamela Kennedy and husband David of Jaffrey, N.H., Gina Dyer and husband Joe of Vernon, Kathy Smith and her husband Eddie of Hinsdale, and Lynn Beckwith and her husband Jeff of Bernardston, MA. Additionally he leaves his aunt and uncle, Carole and Ted Bascom of Vernon, his best friend, Rick Kenyon of Brattleboro, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father who died in August of 2012.
