MONTPELIER - Hazel Long Barnes, 98, of The Gary House, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin.
Born Aug. 5, 1908, in Middlesex, she was the daughter of Clement and Martha (Martin) Long. She attended Middlesex Elementary School and was a 1926 graduate of Montpelier Seminary.
On March 7, 1928, she married Myron N. Barnes in Montpelier.
They made their home in Montpelier until moving to Barre in 1949. He died in August 1986. She later moved to the Gary House in Montpelier in 2000.
Soon after graduation, Mrs. Barnes was employed by the Vermont Mutual Insurance Company, retiring in 1971 as assistant treasurer after 45 years of association with the company.
Her memberships included the Barre and Montpelier Senior Citizens Centers, the National Council of Senior Citizens and the Vermont Mutual Insurance Companies, 25 Year Club. She enjoyed music, playing the piano, reading and doing crossword puzzles.
Survivors include a nephew, Clifford Boyce and his wife Gail of South Glastonbury, Conn.; a niece, Maria Hayford of Worcester; a sister-in-law, Gertrude Barnes of Orange; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Merton, Clement and Perley Long; three sisters, Emma Little, Madine Hayford and Beryl Boyce; and by a nephew, Vernon Hayford.
