LENOIR, N.C. - Bernard "Bernie" Charles Goodell, 76, of Lenoir, N.C., passed away Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
Bernie was born Sept. 1, 1933, in Montpelier, to the late Bernard Wayne Goodell and Effie Mae (Russell) Goodell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Gerald, Raymond, Ronnie and Robert Goodell.
Bernie enjoyed reading westerns, especially Louis L'Amour. One of his favorite pastimes was going for rides in the country. He liked to fix things and spoil his shih-tzus. When visiting in Vermont, he and his family enjoyed telling stories of their childhood adventures. Bernie loved to laugh and tease; it was his way of showing his affection.
He worked for Rahman Construction of Richmond, Va., for many years as a superintendent and Pizzagalli Construction out of Burlington. He had been a member of Local 522 Laborers' International Union of North America since 1957.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Drinda Wallace Goodell; two sons, Bernard "Bo" Goodell and his wife, Angie, of Butte, Mont., and Wendell Goodell and his wife, Claire, of Williamstown; four daughters, Cindy Goodell of Wareham, Mass., Denise Doney and her husband, Stephen, of Williston, Shirley Lackey and her husband, Larry, of Williston, and Amy Overstreet of Bedford, Va.; and his former wife of 33 years, Pauline S. Goodell of Montpelier.
In addition, he is survived by three brothers, Paul Goodell of Washington, Russell Goodell of Jeanette, Pa., and Richard Goodell and his wife, Denna, of Websterville; three sisters, Patty Nelson and her husband, Carlos, of Duxbury, Beverly Gray and her husband, Ernie, of Plainfield, and Linda Goodell of Montpelier.
He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Lindsay and Sara Lemere, Shannon and Dylan Goodell, Ryan and Eric Lackey, and Raigan Overstreet. He leaves behind several nieces and nephews, as well.
