Frank Mefford died April 3, 2009 at the caring home of daughter Pam and son-in-law , Tunis Garner, in Caldwell, Idaho.
He was the second child born to Andrew Hayes Mefford and Ella Elizabeth Jones Mefford at Sunny Slope, Idaho, Canyon County on January 10, 1917. He joined an older sister Alma, an older brother Leo and two younger brothers, Oscar and Lowell.
During his childhood he was raised on the family farm in what was then known as the community of Riverside. He attended school both there and at Greenleaf Friends Academy, where he played football and baseball. Prior to graduating, he had to forgo his dream of making it to the big leagues and went to work full time on his father's farm during the Depression. He also accompanied his father traveling around the country selling potatoes and other farm produce from the back of the family vehicle. This included annual two-day treks one way to the area of Palmyra, Illinois, where his father and mother's families resided.
Frank married Dorothy Gibbens in 1939 in Nampa, Idaho. To this union, a son, Kenneth Franklin was born. They were later divorced. In 1953, he married Berneice Greig Headden, a mother of three young children, Judy, Patty and Brian. To this union were born four children: daughters Pam, Nancy, Vicki and a son Timothy.
Frank spent his working years in construction, farming and the logging industry (he was a whiz with a chainsaw). Part of his younger years were spent working on the construction of the Cascade and Anderson Ranch dams. He always had a green thumb, could grow anything, including beautiful flowers and abundant gardens, which he and Berneice joyfully shared. He was a jack-of-all-trades and passed these abilities and his strong work ethic along to his children. He had a good sense of humor and enjoyed playing pinochle with friends and puttering in the yard. Frank worked in the yard until he was no longer physically able to do so. One of his favorite pastimes was perusing seed catalogs. He had lots of stories from his youthful years to pass on and was adored by his many grandchildren.
Dad and Grandpa is survived by five daughters, Judy (Mick) Bassett, Ontario Oregon, Pat Rasmussen, Portland, Oregon, Pam (Tunis) Garner, Caldwell, Nancy Mefford, Eagle, Vicki Stanger, Riggins, two sons, Kenneth (Linda) Mefford, Caldwell, and Brian (Debbie) Headden, Stansbury Park, Utah, 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both parents, wife, Berneice, brothers Leo, Oscar, Lowell, sister Alma and one son, Timothy.
