Frank R. Berria passed away on Friday, Nov. 16, 2007 at the Trinity Mission Health and Rehab Center of Holly in Nampa after suffering a cardiac arrest caused by an arrhythmia on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007.
Malaxecheverria was born to Hilario Malaxecheverria and Juanita Urriolabeitia on Aug. 15, 1922 in Twin Falls, Idaho. Hilario later changed his name to Frank Berria, Sr.
Frank R. Berria was educated in various schools in southeast Idaho. He graduated from Gooding High School in Gooding, Idaho in 1940. In his late teens and early 20's he worked as a sheepherder and camp tender for four years for companies located in Shoshone and Castleford, Idaho. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was in the invasion of Okinawa.
After the war, his brother, Joe Berria, and he operated an accounting office in Gooding, Idaho. From Nov. 1948 through April 1982, Frank was employed by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. During his tenure he served in the following capacities: Deputy Collector, Revenue Agent, Criminal Investigator, Instructor - Criminal Investigator School, Organized Crime Force Coordinator, Chief - Intelligence Division - State of Alabama, Chief - Intelligence Division - Northern Ohio, Assistant Director - State of North Carolina, Director - State of Alaska, Director - State of Idaho. On May 30, 1974 Frank received a "Career Service Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement." After his retirement he operated a financial consultant practice for 10 years.
In 1947 Frank married Shirley Robinson. They were later divorced. From this union was born Cheryl Rae and Toni Teresa. Cheryl Rae was killed in an automobile accident in 1965 while attending Colorado State University at Fort Collins, Colo.
On Sept. 21, 1958, Frank married Helen Virginia Elguezabal and they adopted Juana Inez in April 1963.
Frank's favorite hobby was playing golf with his many friends. Just this past summer he and his partner Lloyd Noe won the Nampa Elks tournament. This tournament was especially dear to him as it is a mixed group of fantastic men and women that enabled him to also golf with his women friends such as Trini Moad Snow and Jackie Doherty. He played regularly with his golf buddies, Lloyd Noe, Manuel "Mink" Sabala, Rash Iglesias, John Urquidi and many others. One of Frank's great joys was to get together with his good friend, Pete Barinaga, and tinker with his 1949 Dodge panel truck, lawn mowers and any motors that could be tinkered with. Pete Barinaga was Frank's chief advisor in renovating Frank's sheep wagon "Karro Kampo." They were always discussing and debating mechanics. Another favorite hobby is his vegetable garden of peppers, leak, tomatoes, etc... that he loved to share with family and friends. This was a good reason to go visit them with a couple of porros and peppers in hand. Frank loved the Masses at St. Joseph's in Melba where he helped set up for Mass and visit with the children and get them to help him pass out the bulletins and serve the Mass. In his younger days, Frank hunted and fished with his food friend, Ike Echeverria and later with the large Jackson Peak "Hunners" group that talked about nothing but the big hunt in Oct. Frank was an active member of Euzkaldunak, Inc. and a past President. He also belonged to the Txoko Ona Club of Homedale, The Basque Museum and Cultural Center, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and The American Legion Post in Melba.
Frank was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Anita and daughter, Cheryl. He is survived by his wife, Helen, daughters, Toni and Juani, his brother, Joe Berria of Ontario, Ore. and sister Gloria Adair (Dave) of Gooding, Idaho. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews and a trillion friends. The family wish to thank the Canyon County paramedics and the paramedics of the Nampa Fire Department, the nurses, doctors and staff of Mercy Medical Center and the nurses and staff of Trinity Mission Health and Rehab Center of Holly, Fr.
