BAILEY ISLAND -- Herman 'Leo' Coombs Sr., 65, of Bailey Island, parked his dump truck for the last time on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, at his residence with his family at his side.
Leo was born in Brunswick on Jan. 21, 1947, the son of Herman and Louise Madelyn Murray Coombs.
He graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1965 and then attended and graduated from Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in Automotive Mechanics in 1967. Besides owning and operating H.L. Coombs Construction, he drove trucks for Cook's Lobster House, served as sexton of the Bailey Island Cemetery and for awhile the Orr's Island Cemetery, as well as serving as Harpswell Road Commissioner.
Leo married Janet Viehman on March 9, 1968.
He faithfully served his country in the Marine Reserves from 1967 to 1973. He was a member of the Orr's - Bailey Island Fire Department and served as the first Fire Chief of the combined departments, and he was a member of the United Lodge of Masons #8 AF & AM. At age five, he was a member of Fort Apache; he belonged to the MicMac Rifle Club with William Haddon, and was a member of the Fryeburg Academy Class C Football Champions of 1963.
He is survived by his wife, Janet of Bailey Island; his brother, William M. Coombs and his wife Denise of Bailey Island; three daughters, Adelaide L. Warnock and her husband, John of Millington, Tenn., Mary H. Coombs of Bailey Island, and Melody L. Moore and her husband, John of Orr's Island, his son, Herman L. Coombs Jr. and his wife Monique of Orr's Island; five grandchildren, Madeline, Caitlyn and Connor Warnock, Jocelyne and H. Riley Coombs; brothers- in-law, Eugene A. Viehman Jr. and his wife Leah of LaSalle, Colo., and Richard J. Viehman and his wife Cindy of Gunnison, Colo., a sister-in-law, M. Susan Stier and her husband Dale of Belle Plaine, Minn.; his aunt, Grace E. Leeman of Orr's Island; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and his best buddy Bowzer.
