  Maine Sunday Telegram (Portland, ME) May 23, 1999 Helen Katherine "Kay" McLin, 64, died Tuesday at her home from complications related to multiple sclerosis and cancer. She was born in Harpswell, a daughter of William Hellen and Helen Frances Orr McLin. She was valedictorian of the class of 1952 at Attleboro (Mass.) High School and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Bates College in 1956. After post-graduate study in Europe, she settled in Washington, D.C., where she worked for the government on national security issues and as a translator for international trade missions. In 1960, she moved to Mexico City, where she studied international relations and taught political science at Collegio de Mexico and founded an international book company specializing in bilingual textbooks. Ms. McLin returned to Maine in 1974 to teach and perform administrative responsibilities at Bowdoin College. In 1976, she became manager for the college bookstores for the University of Maine at Portland and Gorham, now the University of Southern Maine. She retired as bookstore manager in 1983 due to multiple sclerosis. Following retirement, she became an advocate for people with disabilities by testifying before municipal and state government bodies. She celebrated her life through reading, thinking and recounting her worldly travels. She spoke and read Spanish, French, German, Russian and Italian. Surviving are a son, Erin Rodriguez of Portland, and a brother, William M. McLin of Annapolis, Md.
