Winthrop Marston Vittum, 87, passed away on Aug. 17, 2008.
Winthrop (Win) was born on Oct. 17, 1920, in Haverhill, MA, to Elsie and Joseph Vittum.
A WW II Coast Guard veteran, he worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad. Win graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Engineering and worked in the aerospace industry in California for over 35 years. He was a charter member and a deacon at the Conejo Valley Baptist Church in Thousand Oaks, CA. He served with the Gideons for over 30 years delivering bibles to students and motels throughout California. Win served in the leadership of the Boy Scouts of America and was honored to receive the prestigious Silver Beaver award. He received his 75-year pin just this year.
Win played the baritone horn and double-belled euphonium (a cross between a trombone and baritone) in the Wolfboro Village Band (in NH) and the Allan Hancock Concert Band (in CA). An avid chess player since childhood, Win could still play a mean game! He also loved to play golf in his retirement. He spent the last 20 years wintering in Santa Maria, CA, and summering at his beloved Round Pond (Lake Ivanhoe), NH, camp.
A loving husband for over 64 years, Win was also the proud father of three, grandfather of nine and great-grandfather of three. Win is now with his heavenly father embracing great joy and peace.
He is survived by his wife Leona Frances Clark Vittum; his brother Morrill Vittum of Phelps, New York; daughter Marjorie Elsie Vittum-Jones and son-in-law Larry Richard Vittum-Jones of Seattle, WA; daughter Deborah Lee Vittum Goodwin and son-in-law R.
