WINDHAM -- On the night of Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, Katharine Warren Foley, 82, of Windham, passed away peacefully in the embrace of her loving family members at the Gorham House.
Katharine, affectionately known as Grammy Kay, was born on Aug. 28, 1924, to Warner C. Warren and Marion Hamilton in Cumberland. She had two older brothers, David and Robert, and a younger brother, Charles, with whom she was particularly close. During the Great Depression, her family sustained themselves by living on a chicken farm in Brunswick.
Katharine graduated from Brunswick High School in 1940. Thereafter, she attended Northeast Business School and soon began her career as a legal secretary, working with Nathan Thompson at the law firm of Thompson, McNaboe, Ashley and Bull in Portland. She worked at the law firm for over 50 years, until her retirement in 1997.
In 1945, she married Donald L. McGowen. Together, Katharine and Donald had two sons, David and Michael. The family settled in Windham for 27 years. Following the death of her husband in 1972, Katharine moved to Westbrook, South Portland, and finally to Portland for 17 years. When she retired in 1997, she moved to Windham to be closer to her family.
Throughout her life, Katharine enjoyed reading, candlepin bowling, boating, crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble and Cribbage, watching Jeopardy religiously, and, most of all, spending time with her sons and their growing families.
Katharine's family, friends, and colleagues will always remember her as a brilliant, graceful woman, with a wonderful sense of humor. Her children and grandchildren will never forget her minced-meat pies, cream puffs, and lemon squares, her love of Gifford's vanilla ice cream, her distinctive way of laughing, and above all, her loving and giving spirit.
In addition to her husband, Katharine's three brothers predeceased her. Surviving are her two sons, two daughters-in-law, her seven grandchildren, her five great-grandchildren; her cousin of Cousins Island; and many nieces and nephews, in-laws, and close friends.
