  Grand Forks Herald (ND) September 22, 2000 Leo W. Thomas, 76, Devils Lake, formerly of Cando, N.D., died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, in Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Fargo. Leo William Thomas was born July 19, 1924, the son of Clarence and Elnore (Fell) Thomas, in Hubbard County, Minn. He grew up and attended school in Hansboro, N.D. He served in the U.S. Army from March 1944 to February 1946, during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He returned to Hansboro, where he worked as a mechanic. He married Ila York on Sept. 1, 1949, in Hansboro. They lived in Hansboro until 1951, when they moved to Perth, N.D. He worked for Farmer's Union Oil Co. He worked in Cando from 1966 to 1990. They moved into Cando in 1980. They moved to Devils Lake in 1992, where he worked with the Green Thumb Program at Lake Region State College. He is survived by his wife; sons, David (Caroline) and Steven, both of Fargo; a daughter, LeeAnn (Alfred) LaFrance, North Glen, Colo.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Darl (Darlene), Hansboro, and Dean (Sharon), Salem, Ore.; and sisters, Anna Sommerson and Betty Strutz, both of Gervais, Ore., and Lucille (William) Geib, Junction City, Ore. He was preceded in death by brothers, Alfred and Earl.
