Hampden - Blaine W. Atwood, 89, passed away on Wednesday, April 18th, 2018. Blaine was born in Kingfield, Maine on April 10, 1929, to parents Blaine E. and Velma C. Atwood.
He attended schools in Kingfield, Falmouth, and Farmington. Blaine received his Bachelor of Science Degree at the Farmington, State Teachers College, and his Master's Degree at the University of Maine in Orono. He was an instructor in the Army during the Korean War, and was a teacher and administrator in the Bangor, Hermon, and Hampden schools for 30 years. Blaine was a member of the Maine Principals Association, the Maine Teachers Association, and the National Education Association. He and his son formed Atwood Builders and worked together for many years. He was the first president of the Maine Chapter of The American Parkinson's Disease Association, and helped to start the first Parkinson's Support Groups in the state of Maine. Blaine helped his wife, Glenna, with the writing of her book "Living Well with Parkinson's", and later with the second revised edition. They were invited to speak to Parkinson's organizations across the United States and Canada. Blaine was a member of the board of directors of one of the first credit unions in the area, was a member of the Hampden Historical Society, Maine Masonic Lodge No.20, The American Legion and the Hampden Congregational Church where he served on various committees.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Glenna Wotton Atwood; two sisters, Thurley and Nadine; brothers-in-law, William Tardy, Whitfield Curtis, and George Wotton.
Blaine is survived by his daughter, Susan Atwood of Stockton Springs; his son, Randal and daughter-in-law, Debra of Hampden. He is also survived by those who gave him the name "Pa", granddaughter, Ashley Megquier and her husband, Aaron of Belfast; granddaughter, Bethany Purinton and her husband, Amon of Brewer; grandson, Joshua Atwood and his wife, Nicole of Honolulu, Hawaii; and granddaughter, Elissa Hamblen and her husband, Ben of Salem, Massachusetts. He is survived by great-grandchildren, Rowan and Retta Megquier, Ewan and Hazel Purinton, Kai Atwood, and two others that he never got the chance to meet- Hunter Hamblen, who was born two days before Pa left us, and Baby Girl Atwood, who is due to arrive next week. Blaine is also survived by sisters-in-law, Doris Tardy and Linda Wotton of Houlton, Maine, Donna Curtis of Bangor, Maine; many special nieces and nephews; and long-time fishing buddy, Keith Gove.
We'll miss your stories and companionship. Thank you for passing on your love of reading to all generations of your family. The smell of wood worked well in your shop will always be a fond memory. Many mailboxes will be empty without your weekly handwritten letters. Blaine was also part of the trio known as "The Three Wisemen" who donated countless volunteer hours at the Hampden Congregational Church. Blaine was well respected by his peers, students, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
