SOUTHBRIDGE - Robert W. McMaster, 87, of Columbus Ave., an expert on antique eye wear and Southbridge history, died Thursday in Medi-Plex, East Longmeadow.
He leaves his wife of 59 years, Ellen (Stowers) McMaster; two daughters, Susan E. Bosman of Springfield and Martha McMaster of New York City; a son, Robert T. McMaster of Northampton; a sister, Clara McMaster Scott of Orange, Conn.; two grandsons. A sister, Ruth M. Braid, died in 1996. He was born in Southbridge, son of Robert T. and Clara A. (Amadon) McMaster, and graduated from Mary E. Wells High School. He earned a mechanical engineering degree from WPI.
Mr. McMaster was a production engineer for 40 years at American Optical Co., retiring in 1972 and becoming a member of the company's Quarter Century Club. Always interested in the town's history, he was a past president of the Southbridge Historical Society and contributed to books about the town. He was also an avid collector of antique spectacles and was an authority on antique eye wear and the optical industry, publishing a paper on the subject last year. A member of Elm Street Congregational Church, he chaired the Building Committee for its Fellowship Hall.
