CONCORD -- John A. Vanderpoel Jr., 57, of Crescent Road, Worcester Telegram & Gazette facilities supervisor and Vietnam War veteran, died Saturday, June 8, in Acton.
He leaves his parents, John A. and Joan (Waterhouse) Vanderpoel of Concord; a daughter, Ellen K. Vanderpoel of Acton; a son, Aaron W. Vanderpoel of Acton; his children's mother, Lynn A. (Rawson) Vanderpoel of Acton; a brother, Eric Vanderpoel of Alexandria, Va.; and nephews.
He was born in Torrington, Conn. He graduated from The Fenn School and Concord-Carlisle High School, and attended New England College in Henniker, N.H. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, and the only soldier in his company who was promoted to private first class before graduating from boot camp. He later graduated from East Coast Aerotechnical School in Bedford.
Mr. Vanderpoel worked many years in aviation before switching to industry. He was the former maintenance manager at Beacon Press in Acton, and most recently was the facilities supervisor for the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. He enjoyed the outdoors and nature, especially walking in New England, Canada, and most recently, Scotland.
