  The Seattle Times October 12, 2014 Bill Deacon, known to his friends as "The Iron Duke," passed away on October 6, 2014 in Kirkland at the age of 88. He was born on February 10, 1926 in Seattle, the youngest child of Ralph DeForest Deacon and Harriet Stablein Deacon. He grew up near Woodland Park and spent years enjoying water sports and fishing in Lake Washington at the family cabin on Meydenbauer Bay. Bill was a state and national badminton champion, both in singles play and in doubles with his brother Bob. At age 17, Bill joined the Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. After graduating from the University of Washington School of Pharmacy in 1948, he opened The Bellevue Apothecary Shop (the first such store to feature a drive-in window) in old Bellevue Square, moving later to the entrance of Overlake Hospital. A superb golfer, Bill was an original member of the Overlake Golf & Country Club and long-time host of its annual Father & Son Tournament. He married his childhood sweetheart JoAnne Merriam in 1949, sharing 53 loving years together until her death in 2002. They are survived by their children (and their spouses), Terrence Deacon (Ella Ray) of El Sobrante, CA; Anne Deacon Anderson (Edwin) of Bothell; Theodore Deacon (Goodwin) of Seattle; and Mary Deacon McClement (Bill) of Bellingham; and their many adored grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bill also leaves behind his sister Doris Stern of Port Angeles, and his companion of later years, Irma Myhr of Seattle. All will miss his gregarious wit, infectious charm, and generosity of spirit while passing down his life-long love of dogs.
