DUNHAM, ANNE "MARGUERITE" HASSON, 95, passed away November 2, 2009. She was born in Aliceville, Alabama and grew up in Texarkana, Arkansas. She attended the University of Alabama where she met her husband to be, "Jones" Joseph Dunham of Tuscaloosa. They were married in November 1934. Marguerite was devoted to Jones for 48 years, until his death in May 1982.
Marguerite loved Birmingham. As a longtime member of South Highland Presbyterian Church, she was an active participant in the Presbyterian Women and supported the Church's mission and ideals. Supporting disabled veterans and higher education were charitable causes close to her heart.
She was a 50 year member of the P.E.O. sisterhood, an organization dedicated to providing a college education to deserving young women. She was also a 50 year member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the General Sumter Chapter, an organization that perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence. She served as a Press Page at D.A.R.'s 61st Continental Congress.
Active in the community, Marguerite believed in preserving its history. She was a member of the Arlington Historical Association and the Birmingham - Jefferson Historical Society; organizations that strive to preserve the rich legacy and history of the Birmingham - Jefferson area. She was also a member of the Dogwood Garden Club, several bridge clubs, a supper club, the Study Club and the Hob-Lit Club. For many years she attended and supported the Alabama Symphony.
Her knowledge and perspective of the world were broadened by the reading and traveling she enjoyed so much. She was an avid reader of historical fiction, famous biographies and autobiographies. And, she had a passion for traveling, especially to England. In 1977 she traveled the globe aboard the Queen Elizabeth II with her husband, Jones.
Mrs. Dunham was predeceased by her parents, Yolande Cornelius Hasson and James Earnest Hasson; her brother, James Richard Hasson and her beloved husband, Jones.
She is survived by her son, Jones Charles "Chuck" Dunham, his wife, Mary, more a daughter than a daughter-in-law, of Birmingham and three grandchildren, Maleah Margaret Dunham of Birmingham, Jonathan Charles Dunham of Memphis and John Christopher "Goose" Dunham of Birmingham.
Marguerite will be forever remembered for her loving, gracious nature with family and friends.
