John M. Kokos, 66, of Aledo, Illinois passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Monday, June 26, 2023, at Genesis Medical Center in Aledo. He was born May 9, 1957, in Burlington, Iowa, to Dean A. and Phyllis (Dunham) Kokos.
John grew up first in Oquawka, Illinois, and then Joy, Illinois. Attending Westmer High School in Joy, he participated in track and baseball, doing well in both. He graduated from Westmer in 1975 and after that, held jobs in several different fields before getting his degree in welding at Muscatine Community College and started his career at BT Prime -Movers in Muscatine, Iowa.
His prior employment was at HWH "Hard Working Hippies" Fabrications, The Joy Feed Mill where he worked for 15 years and then became a heavy equipment operator at Union 537 for approximately 10 years.
John loved music, and with the help of an unknown mentor, taught himself to play the harmonica quite well, and later learned the keyboard and a bit of guitar. He was also a great storyteller driving him to write his own songs. He joined with some great friends to create a band that was very popular locally, and they were even asked to participate in the Midwest blues fest. However, circumstances didn't allow them to participate, but they continued to get together often.
Other pastimes he enjoyed were fishing, golf, and solitary walks along the river to contemplate all of life's questions.
He was a protector of those needing protection and stood up to those who would treat others badly.
He was a comedy show of his own and could make anyone laugh. He was full of life and loved everyone.
His children and grandchildren were what really brightened him up and kept him together. Daughter Jeannie, and son Levi, he was very proud of both! John adored his grandchildren, Preston, Ethan, Zander, and Alexis.
He will be missed by many and remembered by all.
John is survived by his daughter Jeannie Kokos of Davenport, son Levi (Sara) Kokos of Muscatine, grandchildren Preston Huston, Zander Huston, Ethan Heinrich, Alexis Kokos, sister Deana Lawson of Burlington, sister Marilyn Staley of Aledo, brother James (Tanya) Kokos of Avon.
John is preceded in death by his parents and sister Cindy Lawson.
