Terry Lee "Pops" Mathus, 59, formerly of Peoria, IL, passed away at 2:47 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at AdventHealth DeLand Hospital, with his daughters by his side.
He was born in Peoria, IL, on November 11, 1962, the son of John Mathus of Princeville, IL, and Judith Hand, formerly of Peoria, IL.
Terry is survived by his daughters, Loreli Mathus of Peoria, IL, and Candice Mathus of Las Vegas, NV; his father; four brothers, Mark Mathus of Peoria, IL, Daren (Katie) Mathus of Peoria, IL, Brandan (Angie) Mathus of Bartonville, IL, and Spencer (Hannah) Mathus of Oceanside, CA; and two sisters, Jean Ann Schmidgall of Peoria, IL, and Shelley Mathus of Colorado; as well as many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; mother; grandpa, LeRoy "Buddy" Hand; brother, David Mathus; cousin, Tommy Trainer; and many cherished grandparents.
Terry was a true outdoorsman from childhood who loved bow hunting, camping, mushroom hunting, boating and swimming. He enjoyed traveling. One of his favorite places was Alaska. He was an unofficial tour guide and liked showing his friends and family around the different places he has been.
He was married to the love of his life and best friend, Lou Ann Dunham-Mathus, for 33 years. Together they enjoyed junking and collecting treasures, attending many concerts and going on long drives. But their favorite pastime was hanging out in their "Barage" while cracking jokes with their countless friends and jamming to AC/DC and Queen. They were the most devoted parents anyone could ever hope for.
Terry was a well-respected member of the Painters District Council 30 Local 157 Peoria and retired in 2018 after 31 years. He was very proud of his work and loved pointing out projects he worked on. After retiring, Terry relocated to DeLand, Florida, where he enjoyed fishing on the Intercoastal, exploring state parks and hanging out at the Eagles Club and with his neighbors.
He was a loving, easy-going and kind man who was a true friend to many. We always say "He never knew a stranger." He was selfless and giving, even when he had nothing for himself. Continuing with his giving spirit, he was able to donate both of his kidneys so that two people may live on.
