Dale C. Delano
April 29, 1923 - April 14, 2012
Dale Delano was born April 29, 1923, in Eva, Oklahoma, to Chance and Eula Lee Sledge Delano. He was one of nine children raised on a farm near Guymon, OK. After high school, Dale served over three years in the Army Air Force as navigator on B-29's in the Pacific Theater of Operations, receiving the Air Medal with two bronze stars. After WWII, he attended OSU (then Oklahoma A&M), earning both Bachelor and Master degrees in Architectural Engineering. It was at OSU that he met his lifelong sweetheart and wife, Ruth Roper. They enjoyed 63 years together. H
e was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; four brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his three children, Bob Delano and wife Susie of Edmond, Barbara Fite and husband Dennis of Norman, and Rebecca Zeavin of Edmond. He is survived by seven grandchildren, John Delano, Nikki Rapp, Mariah Hope, Zachary Hope, Nathan Fite, William Zeavin and Laura Zeavin; and nine great-grandchildren.
Dale was a pioneer in the development of pre-cast and pre-stressed concrete for bridges and structural members. He was involved in the design of several major projects that first used this technology, including Shepherd Mall, the FAA warehouse and the Pennsylvania bridge over the Canadian River. Dale then was recruited to teach in the School of Architecture at OSU. In 1961, he became Associate Director of OSU-OKC (then OSU Tech) until his retirement in 1988. In addition to his position as Associate Director, Dale made the preliminary designs of the campus and its early buildings. Dale was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Edmond, a member of Kiwanis Club in Edmond, and volunteered with many other organizations over the years. Dale is now at peace with Jesus and finally Home.
