Stanley Edward Zabel passed away October 21st at home in Eureka as a result of cancer. Stanley was born April 19, 1922 in Ismay, Montana to Julius and Ethel Zabel.
His family moved to Eureka in 1932 where he attended local schools, graduating from Eureka High School in 1940. Stanley went on to graduate with honors from Humboldt State College with a degree in accounting and attended graduate school at Golden Gate College.
Stanley served with the U.S. Army in the Solomon and Philippine Islands during World War II. On December 20, 1947 he married Mary Rita Mello at Saint Bernard Church in Eureka. Stanley was especially proud of the fact that he and Mary, his three brothers and their spouses, as well as Mary's brother and sister and their spouses have all celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries in recent years.
Stanley retired from Simpson Timber Company in 1981 after 29 years of service. His pastimes included family vacations, time with his grandchildren, trips to Reno with Mary, fishing, and "puttering" in his workshop.
Stanley is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary; his sons, Jim Zabel of Eureka, Frank and Barbara Zabel of Eureka, Rick Zabel and Amy Conlan of Shanghai, China; his grandchildren, Justin Zabel of McKinleyville, Tiffany and Justin Maher of Eureka, Wade Zabel of Eureka, Sarah Zabel of Shanghai, China; his great-grandchildren, Madeleine Maher and Carson Zabel; his brothers, Farrell and Doris Zabel of San Jose, George and Frances Zabel of San Pablo, John and Mabel Zabel of Eureka; his brothers and sisters in-law, Joe and Audrey Mello of Willow Creek, Frank and Dorothy Dutra of Willow Creek, and numerous other relatives.
Stanley is preceded in death by his parents.
