  Times-Standard (Eureka, CA) August 10, 2007 John Ivan Zabel passed away August 3, 2007 at the age of 81. He was born Dec. 11, 1925 in Ismay, Montana to Julius and Ethel Zabel. His family moved to Eureka, California in 1932. John attended local schools and graduated from Eureka High School. John married Mabel Irene McBride on July 10, 1949. John worked his entire life in the building trade. He retired from the Carpenter's Union in 1977 then began a career as a general building contractor. Johnny was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish all over the northcoast, but he and Mabel's fondest memories are of spending time at their cabin on the Big Bend of the Mad River. John was preceded in death by his brothers Stanley, George and Farrell Zabel. He is survived by Mabel Zabel, his wife of 58 years, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
