Mary Zabel passed away on February 20, 2004, at age 81. Mary was born to Joseph and Jesuina Mello on October 14, 1922, in Elk River, CA. Her parents immigrated to Humboldt County from the Azores, Portugal. The family eventually moved to Spruce Point where they were dairy farmers. Mary attended the old Bucksport school after which she helped on the family farm.
On December 20, 1947, Mary married Stanley Zabel at Saint Bernard Catholic Church in Eureka. They were married 53 years before Stanley passed away in 2001.
Mary retired from the County Hospital in 1976 after many years of service. Upon her retirement she worked part time at Coast Central Credit Union.
She was a lifetime member of the Sociedade Portuguese Rainka Santa Isabel. (The Portugese Society of Queen Saint Isabel).
Mary was an amazing homemaker, She enjoyed cooking, vegetable and flower gardening, crocheting, and caring for her children and grandchildren.
Mary enjoyed traveling as well. She and Stanley took the family on many camping and boating trips. Their most memorable vacations included Yellowstone, Yosemite, The Grand Canyon, and Hawaii. Each year they traveled to the State Fair, Reno, and horse races in Grants Pass.
Mary is survived by her sons, Jim Zabel and his friend Cass Yeths of Eureka, Frank and Barbara Zabel of Eureka, Rick Zabel of Bend, Oregon; her grandchildren, Justin Zabel and Janna Snell of McKinleyville, Tiffany and Justin Maher of Eureka, Wade Zabel of Eureka, Sarah Zabel of Bend, Oregon; her great-grandchildren, Madeleine and Lindsey Maher, and Carson Zabel; her brother, Joe and Audrey Mello of Willow Creek; her sister, Dorothy and Frank Dutra of Willow Creek; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Farrell and Doris Zabel of San Jose, George and Francis Zabel of San Pablo, John and Mabel Zabel of Eureka, and numerous other relatives.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Stanley; her daughter-in-law, Amy Conlan; and her parents.
