John Brown Conner John Brown Conner of Chico, CA died peacefully on Sunday, October 27 at age 93. He was born in Jordan, Montana on February 6, 1920 to Ralph and Dorthea (Fadness) Conner.
His family moved to Eureka when John was four. He graduated from Eureka High School in 1939. John's working career began as a taxi cab driver; followed by Conner's Used Cars with his brother Roy; welder on the dry docks during WWII ( a skill he used throughout his life); serviced a rural mail route between Johnson and Weitchpec for many years and retired from CalTrans after 20 years in 1982. For the next 16 years, he pursued one of his passions - fishing in Alaska. As an avid outdoorsman, he tied his own flies, repaired rods and reels for resale and reloaded shotgun shells. He enjoyed sharing his skill by teaching the novice how to catch the 'Big One.' In his 60's he took up golf, becoming quite skilled and played in many Senior Tournaments.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Sharon and her husband Ronald Schmutzer, a younger brother, Roy Conner, and his two sisters, Annabel (husband Raymond Olsen) and Rosemary (husband Bob Bowles).
He is survived by his loving and compassionate wife, Lavina; youngest brother, Elmo Conner (wife Betty); daughter, Jolene Smith; and son, John Conner (wife Julie). Grandchildren include Ivan Smith (wife Stefani), Kristi Smith, US Army Specialist Casey Conner, Chelsey (Conner) Diaz (husband Stephen), Chandler Conner and Shaleen Schmutzer Smith (husband Gregory). Great grandchildren are Elias and Pearl Smith.
