Alicia Sue Hayes, 94, passed away Monday, November 8, 2021, in Des Moines. Per her request, cremation rites have been accorded. Services and inurnment will be held at Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery in Rock Island, Illinois at a later date.
Alicia was born September 13, 1927, in Richmond, MO, to Albert and Nelle (Haskell) Williams. She married Joseph D. Hayes on August 19, 1951, in the Governor's Mansion in Jefferson City, Missouri, where her uncle was governor. Alicia was a resident of Bettendorf from 1958 - 2009. She was a lifelong teacher, serving in a variety of teaching positions, including bedside teaching, private schools, and the Scott County Juvenile Detention Center.
Alicia was a member of PEO in Bettendorf and Bettendorf Presbyterian Church. She participated in many bridge clubs, even earning masters points. Every afternoon she enjoyed watching Jeopardy! and running the categories. Most of all, Alicia loved time spent with her family.
Alicia is survived by her children, Paul (Debra) Hayes of Urbandale, IA; Nancy (Scott) Gardner of Iowa City, IA, and Sara (Alan) Cushen of Bel Air, MD; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth (Knut) Haertel of Clive, IA, Eric (Chelsea) Hayes of West Des Moines, IA, Christine (John Sales) Walsh of Bettendorf, IA, Katie Walsh of Clive, IA, Dan Cushen of Bel Air, MD, Lauren DeSoto of Bel Air, MD, and Michael Cushen of Perry Hall, MD; and 10 great-grandchildren, Elenora, Vivien, and Torben Haertel, Greta and Quinton Hayes, Ruby, Scarlett, and Jack Sales, Anthony Cushen, and Felix DeSoto.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Patricia Williams and her husband, Joe.
