Vergil "Verg" K. Landers, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away on Oct. 9, 2011. Verg was born in Mound City Kansas on Feb. 26, 1925. Growing up in the Midwest instilled the values that he carried through his life. He attended Central College in Fayette MO, where he met the love of his life, Anna Laura Laughlin. They were wed on April 20, 1950.
Verg served over 28 years in the armed service of our country. Enlisting in the Army Air Corp in 1944 until his retirement from the Air Force in 1972 at Castle AFB, Verg served at bases in the U.S., Europe, Pacific, Africa and Southeast Asia. He said that he was honored to fly with some of the best air crews in the Air Force.
After retiring from the Air Force, Verg and Ann moved to New Mexico to enjoy the climate and year around golfing. He had many jobs but settled for selling real estate. In 1987 he decided to retire for good and relocated back to Atwater, and lived for the next 24 years.
Verg's greatest pleasures in life were his wife, golf, sports and people. He never played a golf course or had a meal that he didn't enjoy. Verg never became a scratch golfer but he never gave up on practicing for it. He could make a feast out of sliced cheese and lunchmeat while watching any sports, especially his Dallas Cowboys. Verg possessed the rare capability of starting a conversation with a perfect stranger and in 2 minutes be talking like life-long friends. He made those around him happy, especially his wife Ann.
Verg is survived by his wife Ann, of Atwater, three sons; Larry of Las Cruces NM; Craig, of Atwater CA, and Mark and his wife Jenny, of Yorktown VA. Also four loving grandchildren, Dayne, Sean, Erik and Staci Tilson and her husband Justin.
