John G. McCoy, 59, of Springfield died at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Hospice.
He was born in Springfield on Aug. 13, 1930, the son of Lindsey E. and Dorothy Henderson McCoy.
He was preceded in death by his father and a twin brother, Charles [sic].
A lifelong resident of Springfield, he married Carolyn J. Warner in 1982.
Mr. McCoy was a graduate of Illinois State University, where he received his bachelor of science degree in education in 1954. He then received a master of arts degree in education in 1957 from the George Peabody College of Teachers in Nashville, Tenn.
He was employed by Springfield School District 186, teaching driver's training and industrial arts at Feitshans High School from 1954 to 1967. He taught physical education at Southeast High School from 1967-1974; was assistant principal at Southeast from 1974-1976; principal at Jefferson Middle School from 1976-1980; principal of Franklin Middle School from 1980-1983; and principal of Ridgely Elementary School from 1983-1986. He coached football and wrestling throughout his career. He retired after 33 years of employment.
He was a veteran of the Air Force, serving during the Korean War.
He was a member of West Side Christian Church, Central Lodge 71 AF&AM, Springfield Motor Boat Club, Springfield Principals Association, Retired Teachers Association, Illinois High School Coaches Association, Slip and Skid Flying Club and YMCA.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn J.; one son; one stepson; three stepdaughters; seven grandchildren; and his mother, Dorothy McCoy of Springfield.
