Donald Gene Hoffman, 77, of Des Moines died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018. He was born Aug. 31, 1941, in Garden Grove, to Samuel Louis and Georgia Augusta (Braby) Hoffman.
Don's most recent accomplishment was being inducted in August into the National Dirt Track Late Model Hall of Fame in Kentucky. He was one hell of a race car driver. He was often referred to as "Dandy Don" and "Diamond Don." He could usually be seen pulling in late to the pits.
In addition to racing, he enjoyed camping, deer hunting and fishing. One of his favorite things to do was watch his granddaughter, Kaylin, play softball and grandson, Kash, play football, hockey, baseball and wrestle.
Don will always be remembered as a prankster. Nobody was ever safe, it didn't matter who you were or where he was.
He spent most of his working career as a sheet metal fabricator for various companies in Des Moines. He was also a construction coordinator for Pizza Hut for several years.
Survivors include his children, Brian, Jeff, Dawnita (Rich) and Darci (Kyle); 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; significant other Peggy James; sister Mary (Bob) Johnson and his Viszla Abby. He was also blessed with many lifelong friends, including Max Scott and Leonard Cox, who visited him often.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Diane "Dee" Kay (Sheker) Hoffman in 1993 and faithful dog Lisa.
