Lawrence W. Gann, 95, of 2905 Briggs died at 1:10 a.m. Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Parsons Presbyterian Manor, where he had resided since December 2001.
He was born Oct. 20, 1908, in Dallas County, Mo., to Thomas J. and Laura E. (Adams) Gann. In 1923, he moved with his parents to Arkansas City, where he resided until 1998, when due to an illness, he and his wife moved to Parsons to be near a daughter, Joyce Rhodes and her husband, Bob.
He attended Arkansas City schools and later worked for the Henry Candy Factory, the Kantzer Planing Mill and in 1934, the Kanotex Refinery, which later became the APCO and then Total Refinery Cos. In 1936, he became a welder and kept that position until he retired in 1971. He was a member of the International Union of Engineers.
He married Laura F. Lewis on May 31, 1930, at Central Christian Church parsonage in Arkansas City, with the Rev. C.W. Walker officiating. She survives of the home. They would have celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary in a few weeks.
He attended First Church of God starting in 1937. Upon its closing, he attended Trinity Baptist Church located in the same building. He was active in both churches as a singer and Boy Scout leader.
Other survivors include one son, Kenneth Gann and his wife, Shirley, of Atlanta; one daughter, Carolyn Stacy and her husband, Bud, of Atlanta; twin daughters, Janyce Chaney and her husband, Joe, of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Joyce Rhodes and her husband, Bob, of Parsons; nine grandchildren, Mark Gann and his wife, Nancy, Michael Gann and his wife, Judy, Angie Gann Hardee and her husband, Scott, Gregg Stacy and his wife, Davida, Chris Stacy and his wife, Lori, Clayton Chaney, JoAnn Chaney Borys and her husband, Greg, Traci Rhodes and Matt Rhodes and his wife, Sheila; 15 great-grandchildren, Makenna and Taylor Gann, Michael Joe, Mindy and Mitchell Gann, Brandon, Blake and Brookes Hardee, Ryan, Makayla and Austin Stacy, Chris, Candace and Chelsea Stacy, and Grant Rhodes; and two nieces, Katheryn Elaine Learned of Bella Vista, Ark., and Donna Jane Pankey of Phoenix.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Mae Gann; a brother, Laud; a sister, Golda Wells; and a nephew, K.B. Wells.
