On returning to SC she married and began a family, living in Charleston, Columbia, Aiken and Chapel Hill, NC before permanently settling in Columbia. There she earned a master's degree in Special Education at the University of SC and taught in public schools for several years, focusing on reading problems in children.
After her children had grown she once again returned to the University of SC, and earned a master's degree in Social Work. Her final professional role was working as a community-based social worker, focusing on the needs of the elderly and issues of women and children.
Throughout her life, next to her family, her greatest love was literature. Her favorite activity was reading and her favorite companion a book. This passion was so central to her being that she was seldom seen without a book.
