CHICOPEE - Frederick Winters of Chicopee, born Feb 18, 1918 in Waterville, ME.. Son of the late Amos and Georgia Grindle Winters, died Oct. 8th at Wingate Nursing Home in So. Hadley.
Fred was graduated from Boston University College of Music in 1941. He was a music supervisor in Kingston, Mass. before enlisting in the Navy in Jan. 1942 as a Yeoman at the recruiting Station in Boston. He was transferred to the Navy School of Music in Washington, DC and also served on a minesweeper at Little Creek, VA. In October 1945 he was appointed Music Supervisor for the So. Hadley-Granby Union, and taught there for 34 years. Summers were spent at Owl's Head ME. where he enjoyed his boat and fishing. He was an active skater and skier and was a member of the "Top of the hill'' gang at Mt. Tom. He was a member of the B.U. Alumni Concert Band. He was a member of the Sons of Norway and directed their Viking Chorus of Springfield and Hartford Lodges. He was also co-editor for their newsletter which was published monthly. He traveled Norway extensively from South to the North. Also all of Europe and the mid west and western U.S. '
He is survived by his wife, Marion Solberg Winters, of 62 years, son Rolf of So. Thomaston, ME, Karl of Sunapee, N.H. and Paul of Chicopee, a sister Alice McCartney, of Owl's Head, ME, his seven grandchildren, Kurt, Paula, Eric, Kerry, Jo, Helen, and Kathleen, also his great grandchildren, Ashley, Kenneth, Paris, David, Courtney, Dean, Jessie, Jamie, Megan, Tyler, Karl, Kaitlin, Christy, and Benjamin Zach.
He was predeceased by his brother, Gordon Winters and his grandson Karl Winters.
