Neal F. Mitchell, 84, of Beverly, died peacefully February 16, 2008, at the Harbor-side Cedar Glen Nursing Home in Danvers, following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of the late Phyllis J. (Atherton) Mitchell.
Born and raised in Beverly, he was the son of the late Harry Davis Mitchell and the late Alice (Neal) (Mitchell) Sangster.
Mr. Mitchell was a lifelong resident of the city of Beverly. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a retired ship-per/receiver at Almy's in Salem, where he had worked for 37 years. In his later years, he had worked as a custodian at Briscoe Middle School in Beverly for 10 years.
Being an avid sports fan, his love for the game of golf began at the age of 13, when he began caddying at the Myopia Hunt Club in Hamilton. This also led him back to work there as a bartender for several years. He was especially fond of all the Boston sports teams.
He loved spending time at his summer cottage in West Newfield, Maine, with his family and friends. He also was a devoted friend of Bill W. for the past 30 years.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by three children, Neal F. Mitchell Jr. and his companion, Cindy Pike, of West Newfield, Maine, Donna Cormier and her husband, John, of Debary, Fla., and Paula Nyland and her husband, Lt. Robert Nyland of the Hamilton Police Department; two brothers, Charles L. Mitchell of Bartlett, N.H. and Donald F. Mitchell and his wife, Patricia, of Newington, N.H.; two sisters, Sybil Smith of Southbury, Conn. and Dorothy Crete and her husband, Adrianne, of Manchester, N.H.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also the father of the late Marilyn Heath; and brother of the late Harry J. Mitchell Jr., Edwin F. Mitchell and Winston Mitchell.
