  Campbell Funeral Home BEVERLY - Lawrence Barney Atherton, age 79 years, husband of Harriette A. (Trask) Atherton, died Monday afternoon, March 26, 2007 at the Osceola Healthcare Center in St. Cloud, Florida. Born in Salem, son of the late Lawrence S. and Betsy (George) Atherton, he was raised in Beverly and graduated from Beverly High School in the class of 1946. Following High School, Barney entered the United States Marine Corp. and served his country during WWII. He has been a resident of Beverly all of his life. Barney was employed with Lynn Sand and Stone for 40 years, retiring in 1998. During retirement, Barney and his wife Harriette were living in Florida. Barney was an avid NASCAR enthusiast. He love auto racing and had been a stock car driver at the Pine Speedway in Groveland. He was a member of the Franco American Club and the Union Club of Beverly and the Polish Club in Danvers. Surviving him in addition to his wife are 4 children, Lawrence Atherton and his wife Linda of Georgetown; Steven Atherton and his wife Amy of Beverly; Cheryl Carnevale and her husband Thomas of Beverly; Sandra Gates and her husband Bill of Beverly Farms; 2 brothers, Robert Atherton and Bruce Atherton both of Beverly; 2 sisters, Thelma Manuel of Danvers; Lorraine Gilbert of Maine and Florida; 8 grandchildren, Susan Marshall, T.J. Carnevale, William Gates Jr., Kelly Gates, Courtney Vuylsteke, Brian, Aaron and Ryan Atherton; 7 great grandchildren, Nicole, Amanda, and Joseph Marshall; Amy, Thomas, Joseph and Emily Carnevale; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the grandfather of the late Bobby Gates and brother of the late Gladys Palmer and Phyllis Mitchell.
