PEABODY -- Mr. Maurice A. "Moe"? Atherton, age 94, of Peabody, died on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Beverly Hospital following a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Shirley I. (Appleby) Atherton with whom he shared over 64 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn in 1924, Moe was the son of the late Horace A. and Hilda (Taylor) Atherton.
He was raised and educated in Lynn and graduated from Lynn English High School. Following graduation, Moe joined the United States Army and fought in many historic battles during World War II including The Battle of the Bulge, The Allied Invasion of Normandy and served as a personal driver for General George S. Patton, Jr. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945, returned home to Lynn and has lived in Peabody since 1966. For many years Moe worked as an inspector for the General Electric Aircraft Division in West Lynn and was a member of IUE-CWA Local 201.
Following his retirement, he drove a school bus for Peabody Public Schools and Laidlaw. Moe was an avid golfer and member at Gannon Golf Course. He was part of the Shoe City Golf League at Gannon and also belonged to local bowling and horseshoe leagues in Lynn. He and his wife enjoyed traveling in their 38 foot RV and often spent summers at Salisbury Beach State Reservation and took annual trips to the Fryeburg Fair in Maine. He enjoyed playing cards and scrabble and was an avid Boston sports fan.
Moe is survived by his sons, Wayne Atherton and his wife Janice of Dover, NH, Charles Atherton and his wife Kristin of South Boston and Scott Atherton and his wife Jean of Rowley; his 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; his siblings, George and James Hogan, Shirley Bessom and Barbara Vose all of NH and his many nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends and his beloved cat Ziva.
