It is with the heaviest hearts that we announce the passing of our Husband, Dad, Grampy, Brother and Uncle, Sheldon Harold Dickinson on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Sheldon was born on March 26, 1953 in Woodstock to Bernard and Edith (Everett). After his mom passed in 1984, his father found love with Mona (Sherwood-Briggs) and she was quickly welcomed into the mix. Sheldon was predeceased by his parents, step mom and brother-in-law Danny Downey.
Growing up in Simonds and spending his adult life there, it seems as though most people we meet along the way know Sheldon and have a story to share about their time playing sports with him, being coached by him, having been on his bus, working in the woods with him or just running into him around town. Keep sharing your stories with us and others; it makes it hurt a little less to know how loved he truly was.
He was a friend to all and was known for his playful teasing. His smile could brighten your day, and it did just that for so many of us. We wish you were here to lighten the mood and make us laugh, just one more time.
Sheldon was the biggest kid and could often be found playing with the kids during family gatherings. Sports were a huge part of his life, and this passion was shared with many others. From taking in ball games at Fenway to watching local high school sports teams playing, you would often find Sheldon wherever a game was happening. The grandkids will miss seeing his face in the stands during their games and practices.
In recent years, Sheldon could be found out at the sugar shack in the late winter and early spring months working on the sap lines, running the evaporator fire and, of course, bottling. Not one to let an opportunity for learning to pass, he was quite fond of passing on his knowledge to the younger generation, oftentimes with a smart remark about how much time (or lack thereof) we had been spending helping when discussing the split of syrup for family. The bottling crew will look much different this year, and we will do our best to not get any syrup on the outside of the bottles.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife Nila LaPage of Simonds; sons Carey (Aimee Shannon) of the Kingston Peninsula, Travis (Laura) of Woodstock; step children Cristy (Jay) Doherty of Florenceville and Jason (Angela) DeMerchant of Jericho. His beloved grandchildren Ayden Dickinson, Madeleine Dickinson, Caleb Dickinson, Emmett Dickinson, Cewen Doherty, Kai Doherty, Seth DeMerchant, Sage DeMerchant and Suzy DeMerchant. Siblings Donnie (Norma) of Simonds, Dale (Lucienne) of Kingston ON, Anita (Danny) of St Thomas, Murray (Trish) of Simonds and his chosen brother Albert Bodechon of Hartland; along with many nieces and nephews.
